Our world esteems the public giftings. Movie and tv stars, music icons and talented athletes are among those who command the big bucks, accolades and applause. Even in our churches, it's easy to perceive the people on stage as more talented, simply because their giftings are more public.
Here is what I am learning. If we do not separate our spiritual lives from our daily lives... if in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28) ... then it all counts.
So that means...
Every effort, every well-intentioned good deed, every prayer for others, no matter how inadequate they may seem to us, all counts.
Every behind the scenes job that no one will ever see, counts.
Every minute that mamas spend quietly comforting their colicky babies, disciplining their strong-willed toddlers, helping with homework, or persevering in prayer for their prodigals - it all counts.
Every dime or dollar given to meet a need, to ease a burden, to help with a cause - all counts.
Every minute we spend in prayer and study and contemplation - it all counts.
An offer to help - contributing multiple hands to divide another's work, no matter what that task may be - it all counts.
Every act of kindness, every door held open, every smile shared, every encouraging word - it all counts.
I am a huge fan of 1000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Her book and Bible study are all about counting. We count evidence of His goodness, His grace, His faithfulness...because it all counts.
Most of our giftings will never receive a standing ovation, but they are as important and genuine as the ones we see on stages. It all counts.
Whatever the things are that keep you busy in your own life, be encouraged that they count. Rather than regret the things we can not do, we can choose today to rejoice in the things we can do, knowing that, in His kingdom, it all counts.
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
1 Corinthians 10:31
