This next year I have made a personal commitment to good mental health. I have come to the conclusion that most of my difficulties come more from the way I think than from the way I behave. Moreover, bad behavior comes from wrong thinking.
I consider all these verses on the topic of thinking:
• as a man thinks so he is (Proverbs 23:7)
• be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2)
• take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor. 10:5)
• whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praise worthy think about such things (Phil. 4:8)
• you will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you (Isaiah 26:3)
My mental health or perfect peace comes from when my mind is “stayed” on God. The Hebrew word for mind in this verse is not referring to the logical, rational, problem-solving part of the mind. Instead, it is the word for imagination. It is my imagination that causes me to lose my peace. I must do diligence in guarding my mind against “every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.” I must NOT believe everything I hear or read, but examine the Scriptures every day to see what is true. I must seek wisdom and renew my mind daily and avoid being conformed to the patterns of this present evil age.
If your mind is broken then the only way to fix it is to fix your mind on God. My worries become my prayers and then I must change the focus of my attention. I cannot allow my imagination to run wild with all the negative possibilities. I must get hold of my thoughts and put my trust in Him. God desires you and I to be free from anxiety and fear. He wants us to experience peace in all of our difficulties. The key is from in a trusting, thankful heart. This heart of gratitude is found in a faith that believes God has never left or forsaken them.
